Vitamin B12 - Cobalamine
This vitamin is most important for vegans, since it is to be found almost exclusively in animal-based foods, maybe also in some algae. However, we need extremely little of it and the body can store it for years in advance. To make sure that no deficiency is building up, a yearly blood test for B12 is advisable for all vegans. Do not test for B12 directly but for holo-transcobalamine (HTC) and methylmalonic acid (MMA) - their values are an indicator that the body's reserves are being depleted.
How to use it
Only 3 micrograms per day are needed. These are usually included in any multi-vitamin tablet. Always take folic acid along with B12. Methyl cobalamine is the form that is best absorbed in mouth and intestinal tract. There are no side effects of taking vitamin B12.
